Construction and Working of Vapour Compression Cycle, Low Side & High Side of Vapour Compression System

In the Basic Refrigeration trade, the vapour compression refrigeration system (VCRS) is the most commonly used system. The book “Basic Refrigeration” explains the construction, working, and different parts of the vapour compression cycle. Understanding the low side and high side of the system is essential for installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Introduction to Vapour Compression Cycle

The vapour compression cycle is a refrigeration cycle in which a refrigerant circulates through different components to absorb heat from a low-temperature region and reject it to a high-temperature region.

This cycle is widely used in refrigerators, air conditioners, and industrial cooling systems.

Construction of Vapour Compression System

A vapour compression refrigeration system consists of four main components:

  • Compressor
  • Condenser
  • Expansion Device
  • Evaporator

These components are connected by pipes and filled with a refrigerant that circulates continuously.

1. Compressor

The compressor compresses the low-pressure refrigerant gas into high-pressure gas. It increases both pressure and temperature of the refrigerant.

2. Condenser

The condenser removes heat from the refrigerant and converts it into liquid form.

3. Expansion Device

The expansion device reduces the pressure of the liquid refrigerant, causing a drop in temperature.

4. Evaporator

The evaporator absorbs heat from the surroundings, causing the refrigerant to evaporate and produce cooling.

Working of Vapour Compression Cycle

The working of the vapour compression cycle involves four main processes:

  1. Compression: The compressor compresses low-pressure refrigerant gas into high-pressure gas.
  2. Condensation: The high-pressure gas releases heat and becomes liquid.
  3. Expansion: The liquid refrigerant expands, reducing its pressure and temperature.
  4. Evaporation: The refrigerant absorbs heat and turns into gas.

This cycle repeats continuously to maintain cooling.

Low Side of Vapour Compression System

The low side of the refrigeration system includes components where the refrigerant pressure and temperature are low.

Components of Low Side

  • Evaporator
  • Suction line
  • Compressor inlet

In this side, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the surroundings, producing the cooling effect.

Characteristics

  • Low pressure
  • Low temperature
  • Refrigerant in vapor form

High Side of Vapour Compression System

The high side includes components where the refrigerant pressure and temperature are high.

Components of High Side

  • Compressor outlet
  • Condenser
  • Liquid line

In this side, the refrigerant releases heat to the surroundings.

Characteristics

  • High pressure
  • High temperature
  • Refrigerant in liquid form after condensation

Importance of Low Side and High Side

Understanding the low and high sides of the system is important for:

  • System operation
  • Fault diagnosis
  • Proper maintenance

It helps technicians identify pressure differences and system performance.

Advantages of Vapour Compression System

  • High efficiency
  • Compact size
  • Widely used

These advantages make VCRS the most popular refrigeration system.

Applications

Vapour compression systems are used in:

  • Domestic refrigerators
  • Air conditioners
  • Cold storage
  • Industrial refrigeration

Their wide use shows their importance in modern life.

Safety Precautions

Safety should be followed while working with refrigeration systems:

  • Handle refrigerants carefully
  • Check for leaks
  • Use proper tools
  • Follow safety guidelines

These precautions ensure safe and efficient operation.

Conclusion

The vapour compression cycle is the most widely used refrigeration system. Understanding its construction, working, and the low side and high side components is essential for refrigeration students.

The book “Basic Refrigeration” provides detailed knowledge of these concepts. By mastering them, students can develop strong practical skills and build a successful career in refrigeration and air conditioning.
