Drier

In the ITI Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) trade, the drier (filter drier) is an essential component used in refrigeration systems to ensure clean and moisture-free refrigerant circulation. The book "Drier" provides detailed knowledge about its construction, working, types, and applications. This chapter explains the importance, function, and operation of driers in refrigeration systems.

Introduction to Drier

A drier is a device installed in the liquid line of a refrigeration system. Its main purpose is to remove moisture, dirt, and other impurities from the refrigerant. The presence of moisture and contaminants can cause serious damage to system components such as compressors and expansion devices.

Construction of Drier

The drier is usually made of a sealed metal shell containing desiccant material that absorbs moisture.

  • Outer Shell: Steel or copper casing
  • Desiccant Material: Silica gel, activated alumina, or molecular sieve
  • Filter Screen: Removes solid particles
  • Inlet and Outlet Connections: For refrigerant flow

Function of Drier

  • Removes moisture from refrigerant
  • Filters dirt and foreign particles
  • Prevents ice formation in expansion device
  • Protects compressor and system components

Working Principle

As the liquid refrigerant flows through the drier, it passes through the desiccant material. The desiccant absorbs moisture present in the refrigerant, while the filter screen traps dust and solid impurities. This ensures that only clean and dry refrigerant enters the expansion device.

Types of Driers

1. Solid Core Drier

  • Contains compressed desiccant material
  • Used in domestic refrigeration systems

2. Loose Fill Drier

  • Contains loose desiccant particles
  • Used in large systems

3. Replaceable Core Drier

  • Core can be replaced without changing the shell
  • Used in commercial systems

Applications

  • Domestic refrigerators
  • Air conditioners
  • Water coolers
  • Cold storage systems

Advantages of Using Drier

  • Prevents corrosion in system
  • Improves system efficiency
  • Increases life of compressor
  • Ensures smooth operation

Common Problems Related to Drier

  • Blockage due to dirt or saturated desiccant
  • Moisture not properly removed
  • Pressure drop in liquid line

Remedies

  • Replace faulty drier
  • Ensure proper installation
  • Check for system contamination

Conclusion

The drier is a small but highly important component in refrigeration systems. It ensures that the refrigerant remains clean and moisture-free, preventing damage and improving system performance.

The book "Drier" helps RAC students understand the construction, working, and importance of driers, enabling them to perform effective maintenance and troubleshooting in refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
